KL Rahul Shines Bright and Takes Charge in White Ball Cricket

KL Rahul has been quietly shutting down his critics with his recent performances and showing everyone why he should be in the limelight. Once known as a slow starter and even being referred to as a stat-padder by some, Rahul has now turned the script around completely. His new innings of 93 not out off only 53 balls was a real exhibition of class and self-belief. On a demanding Chinnaswamy track where timing was difficult and bowlers were in command initially Rahul demonstrated calmness and acute understanding. He played patiently in the beginning scoring 29 runs from 29 balls but then changed gears dramatically and hammered the next 64 runs from a mere 24 balls. This change of pace was not hectic or haphazard but steady and tidy demonstrating his proficiency and sense of the game situation.

Playing on familiar terrain in Bengaluru definitely assisted but his achievement is about much more than mere local intelligence. His robust technique and capacity to read varied types of pitches have enabled him to develop as a batsman. He now spends more time before matches practicing on different types of wickets to get accustomed to how the ball behaves. Rahul explained that he attempts to analyze where he can hit singles and where he can play big shots instead of hitting for the sake of it. This methodology has made his game smarter and consistent particularly in difficult run chases.

What impressed everyone in his knock against Royal Challengers Bengaluru was how he played under pressure without displaying any signs of panic. Even in the slower part of his innings he was in control and obviously had a strategy in place. When the time was ripe in the 15th over he went on the attack against Josh Hazlewood and hit 22 runs including three boundaries and a six. But not with any of the shots being wild or forced. It was with a perfectly timed and placed straight over the bowler's head six that he is capable of achieving only on a slow pitch with a delicate open-faced bat only a good batter can execute such.

The other batsmen on the night such as Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk attempted to muscle their shots and got out. They played cross-batted whacks that did not suit the slow surface and their timing was poor. Rahul, on the other hand, acclimatized himself to the pitch to perfection and waited in anticipation for the correct bowlers and the right balls to attack.

RCB mentor Dinesh Karthik was full of praise for Rahul for his versatility of batting at various slots and yet contributing heavily. He spoke about how Rahul has trained with coach Abhishek Nayar prior to the IPL and how that practice had enabled him to take better positions and play more fluently. As per Karthik Rahul has always possessed the potential but now he plays with more freedom and that reflects in his free-flowing stroke play.

A turning point for the game came in the manner in which Rahul handled Suyash Sharma, who has proved to be among the improved spinners of this season. Rahul accepted the duty of playing Suyash carefully so that his partner Tristan Stubbs wouldn't have to cope with too many challenging deliveries. Rahul faced 13 balls off Suyash and only got four runs from them but that was a sensible move on his part instead of being a defensive approach. He was ensuring Delhi Capitals did not lose a wicket to the night's best bowler.

When in the dying moments of the game Rahul nailed the victory with a six off Yash Dayal he celebrated differently. He sketched a circle on the ground and touched his bat at the middle of the circle. After a while he averred that this is his home pitch and he is more familiar with it than anybody else. That gesture felt like more than merely a triumph. It felt like KL Rahul marking his claim in white ball cricket in the most confident manner possible.

Delhi Capitals now are constructing their batting around him and it only makes sense. He is not merely a member of the team anymore but a captain who understands when to steady the innings and when to go for the kill. With such performances Rahul has left no doubt that he is capable of being the pillar of his team and maybe Indian cricket in white ball conditions. His cool demeanor smart choice and capacity for adjustment are distinguishing him and winning matches in style.
