Jasprit Bumrah's Fitness for Champions Trophy 2025-Experts Raise Questions Over Risk
When India is scheduled to play against the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, some experts are putting questions on whether Jasprit Bumrah can be fit as well as is there a danger of risking one of the superstar bowlers playing despite injury woes.

Jasprit Bumrah's fitness for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is in question after he suffered an injury in the final Test against Australia. Even though he was phenomenal during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, taking 32 wickets in five Tests, Bumrah's fitness is always a question. After the present injury, in Sydney, he will not be able to bowl the last few innings of the Test match although he will further raise suspicions for his availability during the much-sought after championship of the coming Champions Trophy in this year itself.
Former India trainer and strength and conditioning head coach for India's World Cup-winning 2011 team Ramji Srinivasan asked Bumrah not to "push himself for the Champions Trophy". Srinivasan said he would be extremely careful and said, "While Bumrah is an asset of gold to India, a single tournament does not matter much, but the long-term fitness has to come above everything. A Champions Trophy is not the end of the world, and Bumrah is a treasure who should be handled with care.".
His reported injury was in the form of back spasms, and on Day 2 of the fifth Test, Bumrah left the field and was taken in for scans. While back spasms are usually known to heal fast, Srinivasan reminded that there is always a case of underlying problems with more grave issues attached. He said, "Stress-related injuries that arise from over-use of the body over a protracted period of play can often be much worse.". "If it's just spasms, he should come back right away, but if it's a stress injury, then from Grade 1 up to Grade 3, recovery time can be as short as one month and may take as long as six months."
While cautioning that Bumrah has carried quite a heavy load for the past few years-including the quite-tiring series against Australia, Srinivasan thus warned that the minor stress fracture could take the huge toll it would if left untouched proper time to get healed. At the best, of course, an injury to fast bowler from this kind causes a huge backburner effect: a lot has been placed over him and all his inconsistency spells impending doom, delay in recovery meaning a career jeopardized long after for both an individual and even a team.
The series itself is set within three ODIs and five T20Is while India readies for the impending tournament with England and hosts the Champions Trophy. This would be a significant build-up to the tournament scheduled for 2025. The Indian side needs to submit their champions trophy squad by January 12. However, the team can modify it up until Feb 13th. With this in view, there would hardly be elbow room in matters of fitness. This is the case especially considering a player such as Bumrah.
According to Srinivasan, injury and the availability of Bumrah for Champions Trophy has brought a question mark on his mind, and, as such, he does not feel that Bumrah's health be sacrificed at the altar of this tournament. Despite being an unquestionable talent, the likelihood of aggravating the suspected stress injury would make him unavailable for Champions Trophy while denying him many series and bigger events in future.
As Bumrah continues on his road to recovery, his Indian team management wonders if he will be able to make the cut for the Champions Trophy at the end. It was just a gentle reminder from the physio about treating injuries of big players with great care: top players such as Bumrah should not be rushed into the fray again. For the time being, all eyes on Bumrah as India is readying to go through one hectic cricketing calendar in 2025.
Whether Bumrah would feature in the Champions Trophy or not would depend upon whether he has fully recovered from his injury or not. If he is not fit at that time when the squad is to be announced, then it's most likely that he may not feature in the tournament, which would determine whether the player or the team is going to enjoy success in the tournament. The Indian team has to balance the short-term objective of going to the Champions Trophy with the long-term health and performance of one of their most valuable players.
