Young Stars with Fabled Surnames Prepare for Delhi Premier League 2025

The Delhi Premier League 2025 is making huge waves and generating plenty of excitement this year as it brings not just new talent but also a few notable cricketing names to the foreground. Two youngsters are making headlines even prior to the auction, which starts on July 5. One is Aaryavir Sehwag, who is the son of ex-Indian opener Virender Sehwag. The other is Aaryaveer Kohli, nephew of cricket icon Virat Kohli. Both the young men are among those who have been mentioned in the players' draft for this highly popular T20 league and are likely to vie for inclusion on what has been one of the most prominent T20 platforms at the domestic level.

17-year-old Aaryavir Sehwag has already played for Delhi at the Under-19 level and has made a name for himself by scoring an outstanding 297 runs in a game against Meghalaya. His dominant junior level performance has seen him included in Category B of the DPL auction.
Curiously his 15-year-old brother Vedant Sehwag is also included in the draft and will be playing in the same league. Vedant is a off-spinner. He has played for Delhi Under-16s and is also placed in Category B. The presence of both brothers in the same category has drawn attention as fans are curious to see how they will perform under the spotlight.

On the other side is Aaryaveer Kohli who is the son of Virat Kohli’s elder brother Vikas Kohli. Aaryaveer is 15 years old and plays as a leg-spinner. He follows in the footsteps of his famous uncle not only in passion for the game but also in training as he trains under Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Raj Kumar Sharma.
Aaryaveer is listed in Category C and was a registered player for Delhi Under-16s last season. Although he hasn't yet become a headline grabber like his uncle, he is consistently improving and this tournament can prove to be the ideal platform to discover his talent.

Besides the thrill this season, there's also the addition of new teams to the league. Two new clubs Outer Delhi and New Delhi have been added which makes the number of competing teams eight. This growth is likely to enhance the degree of competition and provide additional opportunities for young players to excel.
The initial teams in the league were South Delhi Superstarz East Delhi Riders Central Delhi Kings North Delhi Strikers West Delhi Lions and Purani Dilli 6. All of these teams had been great in terms of energy and spirit in the 2024 edition.

In the previous year's tournament, the East Delhi Riders were the champions in what was a thrilling final against the South Delhi Superstarz. The final game was played in New Delhi and was the season's most suspenseful game. East Delhi Riders posted a good total of 183 for 5 thanks to a pounding 78 off 39 balls knock by Mayank Rawat, who remained unbeaten.
His innings was characterized by aggression and confidence as he hammered seven boundaries and six sixes. Rawat's performance ensured his team the much-needed boost prior to their bowlers taking control.

Simarjeet Singh and Raunak Waghela both claimed three wickets apiece to prevent the South Delhi Superstarz from chasing the target.
In spite of a good start and maintaining the run rate required at the beginning of the innings the Superstarz collapsed under pressure. Key players like Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni got out in the early stages of the innings. Arya obtained only six off two balls and Badoni managed seven off five deliveries only. Bhagwan Singh and Simarjeet Singh were the two batsmen who knocked them back to the pavilion. These losses early in the game made it difficult for South Delhi Superstarz to recover and they lost the match by three runs.

The Delhi Premier League has turned out to be a top-followed tournament particularly for aspiring cricketers who want to establish themselves. It is not just a source for up-and-coming players, but it is also a launch pad for those who are star-pedigree and wish to establish their own identity as a cricketer.
