The Controversy Over Retiring the Pataudi Trophy
The cricket fraternity is split over the potential retirement of the Pataudi Trophy, and it has brought about debates regarding its history, importance, and destiny in Test cricket.

Following the IPL 2025 the Indian cricket team will visit England for a five-Test series beginning on June 20. This series has always held much importance for both teams but this time there is a chance that it may not be referred to as the Pataudi Trophy. This award was dedicated to the name of the Pataudi family who contributed two captains Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who was also popularly known as Tiger Pataudi, to India. The England and Wales Cricket Board has plans to retire the Pataudi Trophy that was a part of India against England series in England since 2007.
The Pataudi Trophy was instituted to celebrate 75 years of the India-England Test match. Since then, it has remained an integral part of cricketing history between the two countries. Every time India competed against England in England this trophy was presented to the victors. Conversely when England toured India the Test series was referred to as the Anthony de Mello Trophy in honor of a past president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy has left many cricket enthusiasts surprised.
Sharmila Tagore wife of the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi has reacted with dismay to this move. She revealed that she has not received any direct communication from the England and Wales Cricket Board but a letter has been sent to her son Saif Ali Khan informing him about their decision. She mentioned that it is up to the Board of Control for Cricket in India to decide whether they want to keep the legacy of Tiger Pataudi alive.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has not issued any definitive statement regarding the issue. When questioned for a response their spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the move. This has raised many questions in the minds of cricket fans about why such a significant piece of India versus England history is being retired.
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was one of India's finest cricket captains. Though he lost the sight of one eye from an accident, he never stopped playing cricket and captained the Indian team with lot of determination. He represented India in 46 Test matches and scored 2793 runs at an average of 34.91. His best score was an unbeaten 203 and he had six centuries and 16 fifties during his career. His leadership abilities and boldness on the pitch made him one of the most iconic personalities in Indian cricket.
It is not common to retire a trophy in cricket but there have been some exceptions where this has occurred. An example is the Wisden Trophy which was contested between England and West Indies. It was subsequently renamed the Richards-Botham Trophy after cricket legends Viv Richards and Ian Botham. Some think the same might be possible with the Pataudi Trophy if it is retired. A new trophy may be launched in its place, possibly with a different name.
Most cricket fans and professionals feel that the Pataudi Trophy must remain as it is a very important part of cricket history between India and England. It's not only a name but also a respect for one of the best captains India has ever had. If the trophy gets retired it might result in the end of a legacy which has been cheered for years. The move to retire the Pataudi Trophy has initiated controversies among cricket enthusiasts with several raising doubts about the necessity for such a shift.
As the India vs England Test series draws near, all attention will be on the ultimate call on the Pataudi Trophy. Will it be retired or will the cricket authorities change their mind Will that be known with how the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the England and Wales Cricket Board deal with this matter. The fans will be waiting patiently for an official statement that will seal the fate of this prestigious trophy.
