Sunil Gavaskar Attacks Bogus Quotes and Expresses His Anger

Sunil Gavaskar one of the most renowned figures of Indian cricket has recently voiced his frustration about something which has been irritating him for some time now. While in England as a member of India's Test series broadcast crew he went on social media and spoke about a matter that countless fans and followers might not have realized. In the past few months, Gavaskar observed that a number of sports websites and online handles have been posting false quotes and statements in his name. These are all things he never uttered but are still being circulated on the web without checks or verification. Evidently disturbed by this Gavaskar put up a video on Instagram in which he politely but assertively asked everybody to fact-check before passing on information. He told people that just because something is on websites or social media does not make it true.

In the video he explained that a lot of individual accounts and sports websites have been abusing his name and releasing statements that are entirely untrue. He requested people to refrain from believing everything they see online particularly from random sources.
He also concluded the video by wishing everyone well but stated that such action needs to cease. Gavaskar's fans liked his candour and concurred that one must verify facts before believing anything that goes viral. The abuse of public personalities' names is common enough but when one of the level of Gavaskar steps in to set things straight, it becomes serious business.

Coincidentally, around the same time Gavaskar was also in the middle of a cricketing controversy regarding Jasprit Bumrah who is now India's go-to pace bowler. Gavaskar had previously recommended playing Bumrah in all five Tests against England. His rationale was probably due to the fact that Bumrah is in top form and is one of the most lethal fast bowlers in the world.
Gavaskar possibly thought that retaining him in all matches would make India the favorites for the series. However his suggestion was not accepted by the Indian team management. Head coach Gautam Gambhir responded to this idea by saying that they need to carefully manage Bumrah’s workload. According to Gambhir the team had already decided before the tour began that Bumrah would play only three out of the five matches. He further added that they would continue to monitor Bumrah's physical condition and take further calls based on his health.

Workload management is a big issue in international cricket particularly when it involves fast bowlers. Bumrah has an injury history and the team does not want to over-bow him in the course of a long series. Gambhir clarified that even though Bumrah is a vital player long-term, the strategy is to keep him fit for the matches ahead later in the year.
The team strategy appears to be more about sustainability rather than immediate gains. This approach however made sense did not sit well with some analysts who are of the opinion that India should go all out in each match particularly in a tough series like the one against England.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri too spoke his mind and took a slightly different view. Speaking on Sky Sports Shastri opined that resting Bumrah for the second Test would be taking a risk. He said that if India is 2-0 down in the series it would be extremely difficult to stage a comeback.
He hinted that sometimes it is prudent to take a risk and play your best players instead of keeping them back and then repenting later. His observation is one of more attack-minded approach to Test cricket particularly when playing away from home where every match becomes important.

As per an Indian Express report Bumrah is expected to be given a break for the second Test which will start on July 2 in Birmingham. This also confirms what Gambhir had stated before the tour kick-started that Bumrah would be missing two Tests during the series.
While some fans are disappointed due to Bumrah being in such great form others realize the necessity of taking care of an individual's health. It is a difficult decision for the team management since they have to balance between winning immediately and safeguarding the future of their blue-chip players.

The whole episode reflects the passion and closely watched nature of cricket in India. Each utterance of a great like Gavaskar or a team management decision is well scrutinized and debated by fans media and commentators. Gavaskar's outrage about manipulated quotes also showcases the negative aspect of social media where misinformation spreads rapidly and taints the image of public figures.
Conversely the debate regarding Bumrah's playing hours reflects how meticulous planning and contemplation go into each series.

At the age of 75, Gavaskar remains a vocal presence in the world of cricket. Whether he is in the commentary box or posting his opinions online he remains actively engaged in the sport that he once dominated.
His latest social media post acted as a warning and a reminder that we have all got a duty to share only what is truth. His words were not just about himself but about the general culture of spreading unverified content. Hopefully this message will reach more people and encourage responsible behavior online.

All attention will be on the Indian team in the days ahead when they start preparations for the second Test against England. The supporters will look forward to knowing who will take Bumrah's place if he is actually rested and how the team holds up without its pace spearhead. Whatever the outcome the availability of seasoned voices such as Gavaskar and Shastri guarantees that Indian cricket talk will be livelier more passionate and engaging.
