Shubman Gill Demands More Responsibility from Indian Top Order in Light of Lower Order Fears

Shubman Gill has called on India's top-order batsmen to take greater responsibility, especially with the lower order still lacking any degree of consistency. According to him, the building of strong foundations should be the priority, which implies the growing concern over India's batting depth in crucial Tests.

Shubman Gill Demands More Responsibility from Indian Top Order in Light of Lower Order Fears

Shubman Gill recently spoke out during a press conference prior to the second Test against England and made some candid statements that came under everyone's notice. With the Indian team preparing to overcome the first Test defeat, Gill spoke about a couple of aspects where the team requires improvement. One of the key points he emphasized was the absence of support from the Indian lower order, which is becoming a point of concern in important matches. He contrasted India's batting depth with that of other countries and noted that the lower-order batsmen are usually not able to back the top order when they are needed.

Gill shared that this has been something that has been discussed by the team for a while.
He opined that other sides appear to possess a deeper batting line-up into the lower order while India is occasionally short in that regard. In his view, this becomes an issue mainly when the matches are close and the opposing side seeks an opportunity to regain the initiative. In his opinion if the lower-order batsmen cannot survive and contribute those precious runs the game can easily turn in the favor of the rival team.

Reflecting upon his own effort in the first Test Gill accepted his own errors as well.
He had made a grand 147 but himself admitted that he could have scored 50 more runs particularly when he was batting with Rishabh Pant. He added that the manner in which he was dismissed was disappointing as it was a moment when he could have established a stronger partnership. Gill emphasized that when a batsman is settled at the crease it is his responsibility to continue and bat as long as possible particularly when the lower order is not reliable. He feels that if there is a lack of depth in the batting line-up the top order should take the full onus upon themselves and bat the opposing team out of the match.

This type of candid self-reflection and a gentle reminder to his teammates indicates that Gill is maturing in his leadership position. Rather than pointing fingers at others completely he confessed that everybody including himself has things to improve on. But he also emphasized that the top order needs to realize their role better.
If the premier batsmen fail to score heavily or play long innings it adds undue pressure on the tailenders who never seem to cope with the bowling attacks of the likes of England.

Gill also had his say on Indian bowling effort in the first Test.
He laid emphasis on the importance of bowlers being accurate and consistent particularly while playing against a batting team like England that is renowned for punishing even slightly wayward deliveries. He said that England's batsmen don't give too many chances and even good balls are dispatched for runs. As per Gill the actual test for bowlers is to continue hitting the same spot repeatedly even when pitch and conditions are not in their favor.

He noted that India's bowling lineup for the first match consisted of four fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah Prasidh Krishna Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj with only one spinner Ravindra Jadeja.
Even with such a powerful pace attack India was unable to defend a gigantic total of 371 runs. Gill suggested that this could be due to the bowlers' inability to bowl consistently to the right spots enabling the English batsmen to dominate the game. It is a reminder that in contemporary cricket it is not merely a matter of possessing quality bowlers but also of how well they can implement plans when under pressure.

India is now 0-1 behind in the series and the Birmingham Test becomes all the more crucial.
With the series hanging in the balance, the team will have to correct both their batting and bowling quickly. Gill's statement goes on to indicate that there needs to be better understanding and communication in the team. The top order has to be more patient and disciplined and the bowlers have to keep to their plans irrespective of how flat or unhelpful the track is.

One of the learnings out of Gill's press conference is that in Test cricket partnerships matter. Whether it is a 100-run partnership between two top-order batsmen or a 30-run addition from the tail every run matters. Gill's explanation of how he and Rishabh Pant may have contributed 50 more runs demonstrates how the addition of a few overs at the wicket can transform the outcome of a match.
When the lower order gets destroyed in a hurry it leaves no scope for mistake and the topmost batsmen are left to carry the load on their own shoulders.

Gill's words are not only what was wrong in the previous match but also a reminder to the team to regroup and return stronger.
He is motivating his colleagues particularly those who are at the top to take the lead from the front because that is what will make the team have a genuine chance in the upcoming match. His message is loud and clear that depending too heavily on one or two players would not work and everybody has to contribute whether it is run scoring or following bowling plans.

As India gets ready for the second Test the attention will be on how well the team can react to this wake-up call. Will the upper order hold firm and bat through the innings Will the bowlers remain disciplined and true Will the lower order provide some resistance when required All these will be solved soon but for now Gill's press conference has laid out the tone for what might be an exciting comeback effort by India.
