Shubman Gill Appointed Vice Captain of Asia Cup 2025 as India Release Squad
Shubman Gill has been appointed vice captain for India's Asia Cup 2025 team. The young opener is back in the T20I squad after being left out of the England series and will be assisting captain Suryakumar Yadav. Jasprit Bumrah also returns to the team as India look to win their ninth Asia Cup title.

Shubman Gill has come back strongly to India's T20I squad and has been entrusted with a major responsibility immediately. The 25 year old classy opener has been appointed vice captain for the Asia Cup 2025 that is scheduled to be held in September. This is a significant step in his global career as he was not included in the last T20 assignment against England. Being picked not only fortifies India's upper order but also reflects the faith the selectors have reposed in him. India's team for the competition will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav and features a few young faces along with older names.
Gill is joined by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as the three front-line openers in the 15 member team. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were overlooked while adding Jitesh Sharma as the second wicketkeeper. This selection has sparked a lot of debate since Jaiswal had been in the running for a top order position but the selectors chose Gill whose IPL record and captaincy skills made a compelling case for him. Gill scored 650 runs in the 2025 IPL with a great strike rate of 155.87 and led Gujarat Titans to the playoffs. His performance highlighted his capacity for quick scoring as well as captaining effectively which could be the reason why the board appointed him as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav.
The team seems well balanced with batting strength and a satisfactory combination of bowlers. Along with Gill and the other openers the batting team also comprises Tilak Varma Rinku Singh and the fireworks all rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube. The spin unit will have to depend on Kuldeep Yadav Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel and Abhishek Sharma is also capable of bowling part time spin if required. This gives the team management the freedom to make changes based on conditions in the UAE where the tournament is to be staged.
One of the major highlights of this team is the return of Jasprit Bumrah who was India's best performer in the last T20 World Cup. Bumrah had missed a number of series because of fitness problems but now returns to the team in place of Mohammed Shami. His return instantly enhances India's bowling attack that also has Arshdeep Singh Harshit Rana and Hardik Pandya in the pace department. With Bumrah at the helm of the bowling unit India will be optimistic about their prospects of holding down totals or checking opponents on batting-friendly pitches.
The other interesting aspect is how the team looks differently compared to the one that faced England this year. The likes of Washington Sundar Ravi Bishnoi Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel were left out whereas Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh did manage to retain their spots. This might indicate the direction where the management is heading slightly differently by which they might not be depending too much on all rounders in the playing eleven. Instead they seem to be supporting specialists in batting and bowling to provide them with depth and solidity.
Gill's elevation to vice captaincy also coincides with a period when his contribution in the shortest format was being debated. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma had impressed in recent series against Bangladesh South Africa and England which had made Gill's position appear doubtful. But his exceptional IPL and his experience of captainship of India in the Test series in England provided him with an edge. Actually he had just led India for the first time in that drawn series demonstrating his leadership skills at the international level. Assuming the vice captaincy role in a big competition like the Asia Cup will help him develop as a leader further.
India's full squad is Suryakumar Yadav captain Shubman Gill vice captain Sanju Samson Abhishek Sharma Tilak Varma Rinku Singh Hardik Pandya Shivam Dube Kuldeep Yadav Axar Patel Jitesh Sharma Harshit Rana Arshdeep Singh Varun Chakaravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah. Standby players are Prasidh Krishna Washington Sundar Dhruv Jurel Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Standby players allow India to prepare for injury or last minute replacements if needed.
The tournament will start in September and India will initiate their campaign against UAE at the Dubai International Stadium on September 10. Having a proud record of being eight time Asia Cup winners, India as a team will again be among the favorites. The addition of seasoned match winners such as Bumrah and Hardik to the exciting young guns like Abhishek Sharma Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh in this team creates an interesting combination. Everyone is keen to witness how the new leadership combination of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill leads the team.
The Asia Cup 2025 will also be significant preparation for upcoming world tournaments. With the T20 World Cup looming near this competition will be an experiment lab for the team combinations and tactics. India's management will be eager to know how the batting line-up fares and if the bowling unit can maintain their form in trying situations. Bumrah's return and Gill's form are significant positives going into the tournament.
With India due to start against UAE the enthusiasm of the fans is already in full flow. Each Asia Cup has yielded thrilling encounters and this one will be no exception. With a powerful team and a fresh leadership combination India will be eyeing another title in their collection and Gill will be at the center of this bid both as a reliable opener and as the reliable stand-in for Suryakumar Yadav.
