Once found, Puthur was given intense preparation before being revealed. He was summoned for trials before the IPL mega auction, where MI picked him up at INR 30 lakh. To further shape his ability, he was sent to South Africa to serve as a net bowler for MI Cape Town in the SA20 League. He also gained experience of playing three matches for the Reliance team in the DY Patil T20 competition. These strategic steps helped him to be able to deal with high-pressure situations and sharpen his craft.

Puthur repaid the faith people had reposed in him by delivering a stunning performance against CSK. His 3 for 32 spell featured the dismissal of important players such as CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, big-hitting Vidarbha batsman Shivam Dube, and World Cup-winning all-rounder Deepak Hooda. All these players attempted to play shots against the young spinner, only to be outgunned by his turn and length and ultimately meet fielders in the deep.

Holding back one of Puthur’s overs for the crucial death phase showed immense confidence in his ability. MI bowling coach Paras Mhambrey described the reason why the franchise was so convinced of fast-tracking Puthur's career. He made it explicitly clear that the team seeks potential and not just past performances. "He bowls the ball at the same rate consistently, puts it where we want it to, and has a good googly. Those are the key things we require," Mhambrey said.

The franchise's choice to play him in Chennai was not random. The weather at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is generally conducive to spin, and Puthur's talent was seen in the practice sessions of MI. Seasoned players like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma were bowled by him in the nets and struggled with his bowling, thus boosting the team's confidence that he was ready for the big stage.

Though Puthur's talent was polished, MI focused on preparing him mentally to withstand the pressure of cricket. The discussions he had with cricket icons like Mahela Jayawardene and Kieron Pollard, besides other senior Indian players, played a huge role in boosting his confidence level.

Mhambrey highlighted how these interactions affected Puthur's mind. "It wasn't about skills altogether; it was about making him comfortable in the company of cricketing greats. When you share the same dressing room as Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav overnight, it can be daunting. But he handled it well."

Despite Mumbai Indians' current trend of losing openers in seasons, Puthur's performance was the highlight. He was extremely composed and did not succumb to pressure even once. Even against an experienced CSK unit, he bowled sensibly and controlledly, making things difficult for the opposition.
