IPL 2025 returns from a temporary break with an exciting schedule and electrifying encounters. Cricket fans have reason to smile as they expect intense rivalries as teams fight for a playoff place. The new fixtures guarantee captivating contests, with the return of star players to the field. The restart of the tournament will rekindle the excitement of cricket fans across the globe.

Indian Premier League 2025 returns this week starting Saturday, May 17. Fans of cricket can finally heave a sigh of relief as the tournament comes back from the recess. The tournament will resume with the break-even match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It was officially announced on Monday, May 12 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL will proceed with 17 matches being allocated equally between six different stadiums, and the long-awaited final will be conducted on June 3. Playoff matches will be played in yet-to-be-decided locations.
The decision to resume the tournament was made after constant consultation by the BCCI with the government, security forces, and other stakeholders involved. The board claimed that they never resolved to go ahead without obtaining the approval of all the authorities concerned. Devotees were eagerly awaiting the resumption of the tournament, and action has finally picked up at full speed with a heavy weight programme.
One of the most eagerly awaited games of the new timings is May 17's RCB vs. KKR in Bengaluru. Two games will be fixed on the subsequent day, May 18. Punjab Kings will be welcomed by Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in the evening, and Gujarat Titans will be welcomed by Delhi Capitals in Delhi in the night. The second game will be Lucknow Super Giants against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 19 in Lucknow. Then Chennai Super Kings will take on Rajasthan Royals on May 20 in Delhi. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals will play in Mumbai on May 21. The trophy will then shift to Gujarat Titans vs Lucknow Super Giants in Ahmedabad on May 22, then RCB pitting Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru on May 23.
With the increasing tension, the rivalry will go on with Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 24. Two matches will be conducted on May 25. Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad in the afternoon and Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders in Delhi in the evening. Punjab Kings will then take on Mumbai Indians in Jaipur on May 26, followed by a match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which will be played in Lucknow on May 27.
Followed by the first round of matches, the playoffs will then commence with Qualifier 1 on May 29 and Eliminator on May 30. The second qualifier is to be held on June 1, and the grand finale on June 3. Fans are already anticipating as the tournament is at its climax, with a thrilling end to the season.
The revised schedule has only two double-headers, and both are on Sundays. The venues have been planned strategically so that the rest of the matches are fit into it. Though in the lower hierarchy there were discussions to conclude the tournament in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, ultimately the matches have been planned to be assigned in Bengaluru, Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. What it essentially means is that a few franchises such as Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings will not play their remaining home matches at their home ground. For instance, CSK's penultimate home game against Rajasthan Royals will be held in Delhi on May 20 and SRH's penultimate home game against KKR will be held on May 25. These changes mean that neither CSK nor SRH, having lost playoff contention, will get to play their penultimate home games at their cities of origin.
In another less thrilling turn of events, the rain-postponed May 8 match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings will be rescheduled on May 24 in Jaipur. Apart from this match, Punjab Kings will also be hosting two other matches in Jaipur since Mullanpur was not part of the venues for the resumed tournament. Mumbai Indians, too, fighting for a playoff spot themselves, will host Delhi Capitals on May 21 at Wankhede as their last home game. It was following this incident, an abandoned match at Dharamsala, that the tournament was decided to be suspended initially due to tensions on both sides of the India-Pakistan border. The board had originally considered suspending the tournament for seven days following this incident.
During this break, some foreign players returned from India, and there is no idea of how many are returning with them, given the international cricket obligations. With the World Test Championship Final approaching, with the tournament beginning on June 11, there will be a lot of international players, especially from Australia and South Africa, who will likely have to give more priority to national obligations. This would affect the team squads in the latter half of the tournament. The Indian Premier League never had anything to do with cricket. It is all about passion, competition, and the unifying factor of the game.
The tournament will return after a break, and cricket fans are eager. The remaining matches are the deciding factor for high-octane action as teams fight hard to find places in the playoffs. The fans would all be interested in finding out how the teams will adapt post the break and how they would cope with losing some of the overseas players. With the tournament underway, everybody would be waiting with bated breath to watch the exciting games in store for the next few weeks. IPL 2025 is not merely a cricket competition; it's a frenzy amongst crores of followers. Finally, as the wait is over, it's time to hail your teams as they battle it out for the championship. Once more the excitement begins, the eyes will all be on the players when they step onto the field. The journey to the final on June 3 will be a roller-coaster of bloody battles and moments to be cherished. Let's begin the cricket.
