Usman Khawaja's Struggle-"I Was Just Getting Bumrah-ed"
Australian batter Usman Khawaja talks about the struggles he had with Jasprit Bumrah's relentless bowling during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. An honest confession of the challenges by India's ace pacer.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has candidly described his experience facing India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah as one of the most challenging phases of his cricketing career. Reflecting on his battles during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Khawaja hailed Bumrah as “the toughest bowler I’ve ever faced,” emphasizing the fast bowler's relentless dominance throughout the series.
A History of Dominance
Before this series, Khawaja had walked in with confidence upon the Indian pacer as he could not leave him stranded even in his seven Test innings meetings to date. There was quite an opposite story unfolding in this particular series. Khawaja departed on six separate occasions from as many innings across eight innings before Bumrah left him highly distressed.
Speaking to ABC Sport after Australia retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Khawaja opened up on camera and said, "To be honest, I was just getting Bumrah-ed. It was friggin' tough work. People kept asking me, 'What's going on?' I'm being honest, I was just getting Bumrah-ed."
A Bowler in His Prime
Jasprit Bumrah was the most obvious choice from the bowlers in the series in order that he emerged as one of the world's best fast bowling talents. He topped the wicket-taker list at 32 with an average of 13.06 and went home declared Player of the Series. His match-winning spells tell the tale; neither was forgotten were the improvement he had displayed since his first visit to Australia back in 2018-19.
"He was always good, but this year he has been something different," Khawaja said. "It seemed like he had his tail up. The wickets have helped, but he is six years more mature, understands his skills better and has specific plans for every batter. He knows exactly what he is doing."
A Nightmare on the Pitch
It is not the wickets for him but about not letting any score against; according to Khawaja: "I always feel like no matter how good the bowler was, there is always something with which you score off. So with Bumrah, never felt that, it just felt so hard to score off the guy. Nobody has ever got me as a batsman really difficult to get off strike with, and that's what one always feels of him that he has a wicket ball somewhere up his sleeve.".
Of course, he gave a great psychological edge to the game. He was always dangerous on tough wickets, his skill combined with unerring accuracy and deceptive variations that were always a constant threat.
But for Australia, Bumrah's absence is a welcome relief.
While Bumrah's effort has been crucial in the entire series, his inability to finish the last overs of the Sydney Test due to a bout of back spasms had brought visible relief to the Australian camp. For Khawaja, it meant that the moment they saw him off the field, it actually gave them enough confidence.
You never want to see anybody injured and it's a pity that he was. But thank God for us, said Khawaja. To have faced him on that wicket would have been an absolute nightmare. As soon as we saw that he wasn't out there, we felt that we actually had a chance.
And that was the end of the game at the SCG as Australia sealed the series win with six wickets, but Khawaja said just how much difference Bumrah had made even when he did not play in the series.
The Emergence of a Superstar
Almost an unknown entity to Bumrah as a bowler he had faced during 2024-25, this was what he met when he toured Australia in 2018-19. What has been raw talent during his first series, over six years, Bumrah has become a complete and scary bowler.
He was a really good bowler then, but he is something else now," said Khawaja. "He is smarter, more experienced, and adjusts to situations and batters. It's just amazing how much he has improved.".
He's a nightmare to the batters of the world with his versatility and preparation down to every tiny detail. With the way he can deliver in pressure, go through a carefully planned precise plan, and add pressure makes him one of the greats to have played this modern game.
A Rivalry Etched in Memory
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has probably been one of the premier stages for those very hard rivalries and some of the most memorable performances. But then, the contest between Khawaja and Bumrah stands right at the top of that legacy. Khawaja, he says himself, hasn't been quite at his best so far. That honest self-appraisal brings to the fore the extent to which he respects the art of Bumrah and how hard he is to come to terms with as an Indian pacer.
As Khawaja aptly summarized, “He’s the toughest bowler I’ve ever faced.” The statement not only underscores Bumrah’s dominance but also serves as a reminder of the sheer brilliance that elite sports can produce.
Conclusion
Jasprit Bumrah was in a league of his own throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy-from an unequalled mix of skills to being able to think better than even the batsman. Hence, Bumrah provided ample cause why he was a foundation constituent of India's bowling unit. For Khawaja, experience of getting "Bumrah-ed" was going to remain a part of his cricket journey, showing what relentless excellence could be for a bowler who was still going through his peak.
