Dhoni and Spinners Shine as CSK End Losing Streak in Style
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their five-match losing streak with a dramatic five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025. MS Dhoni's late onslaught and stingy spells by Noor Ahmad and Ravindra Jadeja were instrumental in the victory.

Chennai Super Kings ended their five-match losing streak in style by pulling off a thrilling victory against Lucknow SuperGiants at the Ekana Stadium. It was a match with plenty of twists and turns but ultimately CSK kept their nerve and emerged triumphant. The success of CSK was possible because of Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmad's magnificent spin bowling in the middle overs which kept LSG from scoring. In the later stage MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube maintained a solid and strong 57-run partnership that enabled CSK to overcome the target of 166 runs with only three balls remaining in the match.
The match started with CSK winning the toss and opting to field first. It proved to be a wise choice since the pitch provided tennis-ball bounce and was not easy to bat on in the early stages. LSG fared poorly in the PowerPlay scoring only 42 runs for the loss of two wickets. CSK bowlers such as Khaleel Ahmed and debutant Anshul Kamboj were well disciplined and picked up crucial wickets. Nicholas Pooran was trapped by Kamboj and that's what changed the game for CSK. Mitchell Marsh attempted to accelerate the score with some of his big shots but CSK maintained things in check.
The true magic was unleashed in the middle overs when Jadeja got his rhythm. From a little shaky beginning he dismissed Mitchell Marsh with a skiddy ball and later employed his experience to outwit Ayush Badoni. Badoni was lucky earlier but Jadeja's astute bowling resulted in a stumping which swung the momentum in CSK's direction. At the other end Noor Ahmad bowled tight lines and conceded only 10 runs in his three overs without a wicket. His tight spell put pressure and prevented LSG from establishing any solid partnerships.
Rishabh Pant attempted to save LSG with a late flourish. He was slow in his innings and was held up by Noor who bowled six dot balls to him. However, once the pacers returned Pant found his timing and hit some big sixes to take the score to 166. His half-century was scored off 49 balls and even though it was not that fast it provided LSG with a fighting total. CSK bowlers performed well in general and Jadeja's 2 for 24 spell was the highlight while Noor Ahmad's economy provided immense value without a wicket.
While chasing 167 CSK began well due to IPL debutant Sheikh Rasheed. He played confidently from the beginning and hit six timely fours. His drives and flicks were the highlight and he scored 37 in no time before being dismissed by Avesh Khan. Rachin Ravindra backed him with a 25 run off 13 balls. CSK dominated the Power Play scoring 59 runs for the loss of just one wicket. They didn't strike a single six but 11 boundaries were enough to keep the score ticking at a good rate.
But things changed in the middle overs when LSG spinners rallied back. Ravi Bishnoi impressed and picked two crucial wickets including a clever return catch. Ravi Bishnoi also picked Jadeja who was pushed up the batting order but failed to make an impact. Markram and Rathi also contributed a wicket each as CSK lost the steam and required 56 runs from the final five overs. The match seemed very tight now and it was evident that CSK required a good finish to remain in the game.
It was here that Dhoni and Dube came into the act. Their stand was a combination of composure and aggression. Dhoni played his typical finisher's role, sending boundaries when needed. In the 16th over he edged one behind the keeper and then slammed one through extra cover. The next over Dube took command hitting a four and a six off Thakur who was struggling to get a hold of the ball due to dew. Dhoni then added another boundary and in no time CSK required only five runs from the last over. It was a do-or-die situation but both batsmen navigated it like old timers and finished the chase without losing any further wicket.
This victory was highly crucial for CSK as it not only ended their losing streak but also gave them some much-needed confidence. The spinners did their job beautifully in the middle overs and the calm finish by Dhoni and Dube indicated how veteran players can turn the match around. Shaik Rasheed's debut was also a huge positive as he provided a proper platform for the team at the beginning of the run chase. With this victory CSK will now look to their next game with Mumbai Indians hoping to gain some momentum. In the meantime LSG will get a breather when they play Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur and they will try to come back stronger.
