Can Rahul Dravid's Rajasthan Royals Break Their Title Drought?

With Rahul Dravid leading the Rajasthan Royals, the team is looking to break their prolonged IPL championship drought in 2025. Will his leadership and tactics at last lead them back home with the trophy?

Can Rahul Dravid's Rajasthan Royals Break Their Title Drought?

Rajasthan Royals, the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, have been patiently waiting for their second title. The franchise has experienced several makeovers, with mixed amounts of success, but never succeeded in recreating its early success. This year, however, with Rahul Dravid returning in a coaching capacity, there is hope that this may be the year Rajasthan Royals break their title curse.

A New Cycle, A New Hope

Rahul Dravid, who in the past has been linked with Rajasthan Royals as a player and a mentor, has stepped up to lead again, carrying loads of experience and strategic know-how. His recent success at the helm of the Indian national team, leading them to win big tournaments, makes him the ideal choice to head the Royals' charge. Supporting him is Vikram Rathour, an established batting coach who has worked with India's best talents.

Though the Royals have kept their main players, they have also undergone big changes. Some of their major players like Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Trent Boult are no longer a part of the team. Though they lost these veteran campaigners, Rajasthan Royals have had their confidence on younger substitutes, assuring that they have a solid and balanced team for the next season. A significant return is the reintroduction of Jofra Archer, whose speed and capacity to deliver in pressure situations might prove to be a game-saver.

Squad Depth and Key Players

Rajasthan Royals have assembled a team that provides ample flexibility, particularly in the bowling unit. Their pace bowling arsenal now comprises Tushar Deshpande, Akash Madhwal, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Kwena Maphaka, apart from the returning Archer. They have also picked up the services of Wanindu Hasaranga, whose all-rounder skills might prove vital.

Possible Best XII-

One of the key worries for Rajasthan Royals has been the fitness of their captain Sanju Samson. After undergoing surgery for the right index finger fracture he suffered while playing in the England T20 series, Samson has allegedly passed his batting fitness test. But clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is yet to come.

Tushar Deshpande, the other crucial performer, has been unavailable since September 2024 after suffering an ankle injury. His progress with recovery is critical to the plans of the team, particularly with regard to his contribution in the bowling line-up.

Nitish Rana, one of the IPL's most consistent performers in the past few years, is a left-handed batsman with considerable talent. But for all his impressive domestic and IPL showing, his international career has still not taken off the way he had hoped. His departure from his home state association and a year in which he featured just two times for KKR during their championship-winning season have seen him with a lot to live up to. If he gets his act back together, though, he has the potential to be a star player for Rajasthan Royals.

Dhruv Jurel has already revealed hints of his vast potential. The young wicket-keeper batter has been tasked with game-finishing, an endeavor that earlier players such as Riyan Parag failed to capitalize on. Even though he does not have extra-ordinary T20 statistics, Rajasthan Royals demonstrated immense confidence in him by retaining him at a whopping INR 14 Crore. If Jurel can perform this season, it may be a career-defining moment and a huge shot in the arm for the franchise.

One of the issues hanging over Rajasthan Royals is their batting depth. They possess a devastating top order comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shimron Hetmyer, but the absence of quality finishers might prove to be a stumbling block. Their middle and lower order have usually failed to push the game ahead in tight games, which remains an issue even this season.

Also, though their bowling attack may appear impressive on paper, the true test would be how efficiently the younger pacers cope with the pressure of high-stakes games. With a number of new players in the team, team chemistry and implementation will prove to be decisive in their fortunes.

Rajasthan Royals will have to face a tough traveling schedule, with no rest at one venue for long. The longest stay they will have at one place is for two consecutive matches—once in Guwahati and then in Jaipur. Their sole long break in the league stage is between April 19 and 24.

A crucial factor in their campaign will be their performances at their home ground, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Interestingly, the toss does not seem to have much influence at this venue, as the last 10 IPL games played here have been evenly split between teams batting first and second. Yet, pace bowlers have traditionally not done well at this venue, recording the poorest average and strike rate among all IPL grounds in the past two seasons.

With a robust coaching infrastructure, a balanced team, and a willing captain to lead from the front, Rajasthan Royals have the recipe for a successful season. But can they get it all together and at last lift the trophy after 17 years? With Rahul Dravid in command, the fans will pray that this season is the beginning of Rajasthan Royals returning to IPL success.
