Bumrah Shatters Malinga Record in Mumbai Indians' Ruthless Victory
Jasprit Bumrah has overtaken Lasith Malinga as the all-time leading wicket-taker of Mumbai Indians in the history of IPL. In the dominant 54-run win of MI over Lucknow Super Giants on April 27, Bumrah produced a match-winning spell with 4/22, elevating his MI IPL count to 174 wickets. This feat justifies Bumrah's long-lasting legacy as one of the world's leading fast bowlers of T20 cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah was unstoppable as Mumbai Indians achieved a thumping 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in their game in IPL 2025. The right-arm pacer claimed four wickets for only 22 runs from his four overs, propelling Mumbai to their fifth straight season victory. This wasn't just an important performance thanks to the win but also one in which Bumrah had achieved a massive record. He had gone ahead of Lasith Malinga to become the top wicket-taker in IPL history by Mumbai Indians, taking 174 wickets.
Mumbai Indians set the stage by choosing to bat first and scoring a behemoth 215 for 7 in their 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Ryan Rickelton stole the show with the bat. Rickelton made a 58 off 32 balls, and Suryakumar plundered a 54 off 28 balls. Both of them bold innings set the stage for an awe-inspiring total against Lucknow.
Lucknow repelled Mumbai bowlers in comeback. Bumrah and Trent Boult were out of the box, and the duo picked up five wickets for a paltry 21 runs. The two pacers spearheaded the show with Bumrah taking three wickets in an over and turning the entire match around in his side's favor. Boult too played a vital role, taking the all-important wicket of Mitchell Marsh and finishing off the innings by sending Digvesh Rathi packing.
Mumbai bowlers were as sharp from the beginning. Impact Substitute Bumrah, for Rohit Sharma, sent the ball back straight away to knock out Aiden Markram. Though Lucknow's opening combo of Marsh and Pooran made it past the 50 score during the power-play, the free-swinging Pooran's innings were cut short with his wicket being taken by Will Jacks. Rishabh Pant again couldn't muster a good knock and was seen walking back pretty soon, thereby making Lucknow's chase in tatters.
The middle order too failed, and Marsh and Badoni got dismissed by Boult's aggressive bowling. The three-wicket over by Bumrah sealed the deal, getting David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan back-to-back, ending Lucknow's hopes of a comeback. From a comfortable 140 for 5, Lucknow was reduced to 142 for 8 within the course of a few balls.
Earlier, the Wankhede heat and humidity had made batting challenging, but Rickelton was in top gear. He scored the season's quickest fifty for Mumbai, reaching 50 off a mere 25 balls. His aggressive start put the tone for the innings, and although he was dismissed for 58, his aggressive knock provided a good beginning to the team.
Suryakumar Yadav also contributed meaningfully to the innings, scoring his 50 off 27 balls. His four fours and four sixes made him the top run-scorer of IPL 2025 with 417 runs in 10 matches. He got out soon after his half-century, but his contribution was worth it in taking Mumbai to a fighting score.
Other contributors like Hardik Pandya and debutant Corbin Bosch added quick runs towards the end, taking Mumbai’s total beyond 215. While the Lucknow bowlers fought hard, with Mayank Yadav and Avesh Khan picking up two wickets each, they couldn’t stop Mumbai’s batting charge.
In the end, Mumbai’s all-around performance was too much for Lucknow. With Bumrah leading the charge with the ball and Rickelton and Suryakumar firing with the bat, Mumbai Indians have not only moved up to second in the points table but also showcased their strength across all departments. This victory also marked their first-ever win against Lucknow in the league phase after six encounters.
