A Match-Winning Catch Turns the Tide for CSK Against SRH

In a crucial IPL 2025 match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) played Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 25. CSK managed a humble score of 154 runs, which was comfortably chased down by SRH using eight balls, thereby achieving a 5-wicket win. Such a defeat now puts CSK in with little hope of making it to the playoffs, underpinning the need for a strategic turn in the team.

A Match-Winning Catch Turns the Tide for CSK Against SRH

It was a match that witnessed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) experience their fourth successive defeat at Chepauk, but the turning point came in the form of an incredible catch which will be etched in many minds for years to come. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming did not deny that the catch was instrumental in deciding the fate of the match. He added that his side was "probably victim to a match-winning catch" which changed the game in Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)'s favor.

Fleming was talking about a catch taken by Kamindu Mendis, an ambidextrous bowler who had been pummeled for three sixes in one over by Dewald Brevis. Following some injury, Mendis leaped full-length to his left at long-off and caught Brevis.
The catch was likened to "a football goalie" by Cricbuzz and was most definitely a game-changer. Brevis had been on fire, taking control of the game after a slow start. He was poised to take CSK to a fighting score, but Mendis' brilliance brought his rampage to an end.

Prior to the catch, Brevis had not been able to get going. With 17 runs off 17 balls, he had seemed another CSK middle-order experiment. His knock was a combination of dot balls and couple of singles, struggling against the challenging pitch.
But then something changed. Brevis got his timing right and released three sixes off Mendis. These sixes, one long-on, one deep midwicket, and one long-off, were an open reflection of what CSK had been lacking throughout the season – a player capable of attacking spinners in the middle overs.

After that moment of glory, CSK's innings never quite came back. They were bowled out for a paltry 154 with an extra ball to spare. Sunrisers Hyderabad, though with a few anxious moments, chased the target with five wickets to spare.
This loss was CSK's worst-ever home run in an IPL season, four losses at Chepauk, equalling their previous best.

Post-match, Fleming spoke of how close they were to making the game happen. He highlighted the significance of the catch and equated it with another excellent piece of fielding in the earlier match where Riyan Parag had made an incredible catch at Guwahati.
"It was hard to watch," he stated, admitting both sides were apprehensive and battling on a tough wicket.

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori also recognized the importance of the catch. He highlighted that if Brevis had remained at the crease for longer, the score might have gotten away.
"Brevis was playing great, taking the game on, and that catch by Kamindu, followed by some good bowling, helped us to keep CSK's score in check," Vettori said.

CSK skipper MS Dhoni, applauding Brevis' counterattack, conceded that the team was still failing to cash in on such situations.
He believed that they were lacking by 15-20 runs, particularly in their middle order. He added that their inability against spinners, especially when the field is open, had been a big reason. Dhoni stressed that the middle-order players need to find areas where they can score or play the big shot within their zones. This, he feels, is one area where CSK has been shortchanged.

In the high-intensity world of T20 cricket, it's the smallest of things that can make a game.". All the intention being displayed by CSK, including playing the second-youngest opening pair in the IPL and giving the CSK cap to Brevis, was not enough.
It required a piece of genius from Mendis to turn the game around. It was yet another reminder to everyone about how narrow the margins in cricket are and how much CSK has to work to return to their winning track.
