The highly-awaited win celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore's victory in the IPL 2025 turned into a sorrowful tragedy as an unexpected stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 fans. The otherwise happy day of cheering and jubilation soon turned into tragedy and grief. Most of the spectators who had bought tickets to attend the celebration were swept into a chaotic crowd rush, and almost 50 were hurt and taken to the hospital. The mood that was supposed to be one of joy turned into a moment of misery and disorientation.
Spectators had bought tickets for the last-minute event hoping to see their favorite cricket stars like the popular Virat Kohli. But as the number of people swelled suddenly at around 3.30 in the afternoon, security and police personnel were having a hard time managing the crowd. The gates at the stadium such as the main entrances 12 and 13 and gate number 10 leading to the club house became clogged. With insufficient security personnel to handle the massive crowd, officials opted to close all the gates to prevent ticketless people from getting in. This abrupt closure created panic and fury among the fans possessing valid tickets but unable to gain entry.
One such fan, Prashant Shetty, a postgraduate student who attended with friends, narrated his anguish. He said they were unfairly treated despite holding tickets. They just wanted to enjoy the celebration but were met with police action and bulldozing crowd control. The police had begun to use lathi in order to push the people around the main gate. Quite a number of ticket holders were confused and aggrieved as they were beaten and maltreated while struggling to manage the crowd. People who had traveled from the surrounding areas like Cubbon Park metro station contributed to the growing crowd which forced the police to resort to minor use of force to scatter the crowd.
The situation was particularly alarming at gate number 10 where women and children were swept in the melee. A number of individuals were pushed forcibly, and even journalists who were reporting on the activity were subjected to brutal handling by authorities. The pandemonium forced many of the fans who had purchased the tickets to abandon hope and head home, relieved to have escaped without serious injury. Still, the sight of women fainting and others being crushed under the weight of the crowd left a lasting impression of fear and sorrow among everyone present.
The fan engagement event lasted about an hour before the team returned to their hotel around 6.30 pm. However, the crowd remained near the stadium, causing more traffic problems and confusion before slowly dispersing. The day of tragedy left a permanent scar on the city and the fans. People wondered how a function that was supposed to be a celebration of a big win could become so perilous. Functionaries such as the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia conceded that the organizers were not properly equipped to deal with such a large number of people. He highlighted the fact that when an event of this magnitude is being planned, proper security and safety arrangements have to be put in place so that the fans are kept safe.
This tragic incident puts focus on the need for improved planning and crowd control for huge events. Fans arrive with excitement and hope to celebrate their teams but they also hope to remain safe. When crowds are not managed appropriately and there is no security, even a celebratory event can soon turn into a catastrophe.
