Delhi Capitals Require Bold Steps to Revive IPL 2025 Playoff Chances
Delhi Capitals are going through a critical moment in IPL 2025. With only 12 points, they require aggressive strategies and vital wins to guarantee their entry into the playoffs, including must-win games against their arch-rivals.

Following a solid start to their IPL 2025 season, Delhi Capitals have encountered a slump. With just two victories in their previous seven games, their playoff ambitions are on shaky ground. The team's overall performance has been unstable, and they are now left with a do-or-die situation. Experts are telling the team that they need to make some drastic changes if they wish to remain in contention for the final four. One of those changes could be reinstating a star player who was axed earlier in the season.
Piyush Chawla, an experienced Indian spinner, spoke about Delhi Capitals' chances of reaching the playoffs. He noted that the chances of the team making it to the playoffs are dwindling. Chawla observed that after a good start, in which the team won five of their opening matches, things have been downhill. They have managed only one more victory, together with four defeats and one match that ended without a result. The last match, which was played at Uppal Stadium, saw DC avoid a possible defeat, but they could gather only one point from it, which kept their playoff hopes alive.
One of the greatest concerns for Delhi Capitals has been their opening combination, which has been the league's weakest. The opening combinations have averaged only 20.18, the lowest among all the teams. During the season, DC has experimented with six or seven different opening combinations, but none of them have been successful consistently. Batsmen such as Jake Fraser McGurk, Abishek Porel, Faf Du Plessis, KL Rahul, and Karun Nair have all been attempted at number one, but they have fallen flat. McGurk, initially anticipated to bring a devastating start, has faltered with the meager score of just 55 in six innings. Other players, such as Abishek Porel and Faf Du Plessis, have shown glimpses of form but have failed to deliver stability.
Chawla thinks Delhi Capitals should revisit McGurk as an opener, though he has failed lately. He noted that McGurk can contribute to a good powerplay start for the team. Though there is a possibility that he may not deliver, Chawla opined that it could be worth the risk, as the situation at present is not giving better returns. For DC, this could be the moment to make some daring decisions, given the team is in a desperate situation.
The time for experienced players to rise to the occasion is now more important than ever. With just six points from their first ten games, Delhi Capitals are currently fifth on the table. They are on the cusp of missing a playoff spot, and the next three games will be decisive. DC must win at least two of the next three games, preferably all three, to remain in the running. Chawla emphasized the need for the veteran players to give big performances in these do-or-die games.
The last match for DC against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) showed the extent to which DC has declined. Ponderous at 29/5, it looked like the match was as good as gone. Luckily, a good partnership by Tristan Stubbs (41* off 36 balls) and Ashutosh Sharma (41 off 26 balls) helped DC score a decent 133/7. The match, however, did not end as DC could not claim the full points after it was rained out.
Now, Delhi Capitals are in a precarious situation. Their hopes for reaching the playoffs rest on whether they can win the remaining games. The management of the team has to take important decisions over the next few days, and the return of players such as McGurk might give them the spark that they require. With proper modifications and a bit of fortune, DC can still manage to get back into the playoff hunt. But for that, they need to move very quickly and firmly to change their campaign.
