Bumrah Disappointed Over Missing the ‘Spiciest Wicket’ of the Series
Reflecting on the loss, Bumrah remarked, “A lot of ifs and buts are part of cricket. The series was competitive, and even in this match, we were in the game. Test cricket often boils down to which team holds its nerve during critical moments.

India’s stand-in skipper and star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, expressed his disappointment at missing the opportunity to bowl on what he described as the "spiciest wicket of the series" during the Sydney Test. India faced a six-wicket defeat in the match, ultimately losing the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in a decade. Bumrah, who was the standout performer for India in the series, was sidelined during the game due to a back spasm that struck on the second day.
Despite his absence, the Indian bowling unit managed to dismiss Australia in the first innings. However, Bumrah's unavailability was deeply felt in the second innings, where the home side comfortably chased down the target.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Bumrah reflected on the situation. “It’s frustrating, but sometimes you have to listen to your body. It’s disappointing to miss out, especially on what could have been the most challenging wicket of the series. However, these things happen, and you have to move on,” he said.
A Tough Task Without Bumrah
India's batting collapsed early on Day 3, leaving them with only 162 runs to defend. Bumrah revealed that the team had discussed taking extra responsibility during the innings break. “We spoke about belief. The bowlers had already stepped up in the first innings, and with one bowler down, others had to shoulder more responsibility. We believed that creating pressure could give us a chance to make an impact,” he said.
The Indian bowlers started poorly in Australia’s second innings but fought back with a spirited effort. Prasidh Krishna stood out by taking key wickets, including Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith, before Lunch. Despite this, Australia’s Travis Head and Beau Webster steered their team to victory in the second session, sealing the series.
Reflecting on the loss, Bumrah remarked, “A lot of ifs and buts are part of cricket. The series was competitive, and even in this match, we were in the game. Test cricket often boils down to which team holds its nerve during critical moments. It was a well-fought series, and there are many lessons for us to take forward.”
Valuable Lessons from the Series
The series, though disappointing for India, provided valuable learning opportunities, particularly for younger players. Bumrah emphasized the importance of adapting to different situations in Test cricket. “Sometimes, young players have initial success with a certain approach, but in Test cricket, you need to adapt and play according to the situation. These experiences will be invaluable for our players moving forward,” he said.
Bumrah also acknowledged the challenges of playing in Australia and highlighted the talent within the Indian squad. “Australia is a tough place to play cricket, but we’ve shown we have talent. It’s about learning, adapting, and improving. The youngsters are keen to take these lessons forward despite the disappointment of losing the series,” he added.
A Stellar Series for Bumrah
Despite the injury setback, Bumrah’s performance throughout the series was exceptional. He bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests, claiming 32 wickets at an astounding average of 13.06. He also captained India to their sole victory of the series in Perth.
India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, praised Bumrah’s leadership and effort. “He’s been phenomenal, leading the attack with skill and determination. He bowled a lot of overs, took crucial wickets, and did everything he could. His contribution was immense, but it was also complemented by others like Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Akash Deep,” Gambhir said.
A Bright Future
While the loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was a setback, Bumrah remains optimistic about the team’s future. He believes that the experiences gained from this hard-fought series will strengthen the team. “These experiences will only make us stronger. We’ve learned a lot, and our young players have shown great promise. It’s all about taking these lessons and moving forward,” Bumrah concluded.
Despite the outcome, Bumrah’s stellar performances and leadership stood out, reaffirming his position as one of the finest bowlers in modern cricket. For the Indian team, the focus now shifts to using these learnings to prepare for future challenges.
