BCCI Under Pressure as Cricket South Africa Refuses to Back Down on IPL Extension
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has strongly asked its players who are competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to return by May 26, 2025, in order to prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, which is set to start on June 11 at Lord's. This directive impacts 20 South African cricketers who are already in the IPL, including eight who have been picked for the WTC final team: Corbin Bosch, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs. CSA is working hard to negotiate with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow the early release of these players, emphasizing the significance of the WTC final for the national team.

The current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has run into a major challenge because of the Indo-Pak conflict, and the tournament has been extended. This has landed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in trouble, as Cricket South Africa (CSA) has refused to back down from the extension. The controversy revolves around foreign players, with CSA maintaining that their cricketers return home by May 26 as had been agreed. This has created some uncertainty among IPL franchises over whether their South African players would be available in the later part of the tournament.
The BCCI had initially agreed to let all foreign players go on May 26, given that the final of the IPL was on May 25. The new schedule now, however, has the league stage ending only on May 27, with the final on June 3. CSA, though, insists on its original position and wants the players back by the initially agreed date. Negotiations between the two boards continue, but CSA insists on its position.
CSA's choice directly impacts some major players such as Marco Jansen from Punjab Kings, Corbin Bosch from Mumbai Indians, and Wiaan Mulder from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Others to be affected by their decision include Aiden Markram from Lucknow SuperGiants, Lungi Ngidi from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kagiso Rabada from Gujarat Titans, Ryan Rickelton from Mumbai Indians, and Tristan Stubbs from Delhi Capitals. These players are also part of the South African squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, set to take place against Australia.
As per South Africa's head coach Shukri Conrad, the initial agreement was for the players to come back on May 26, which would have given them sufficient time to prepare before leaving for England on May 30. Conrad stressed that nothing has altered from CSA's end and that they anticipate their players to return as scheduled. He said the ongoing negotiations are being managed at the level of superior officials, such as the Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe and CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki. In spite of these negotiations, Conrad was not sure that CSA would change its stance.
Nkwe further confirmed that negotiations with the BCCI were still ongoing but maintained that the priority was to get players back in time for national obligations. In spite of the entanglements, some IPL franchises will likely have South African players at their disposal. Players not in the WTC final are Dewald Brevis of Chennai Super Kings, Faf du Plessis and Donovan Ferreira of Delhi Capitals, Gerald Coetzee of Gujarat Titans, Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje of Kolkata Knight Riders, David Miller and Matthew Breetzke of Lucknow Super Giants, Nandre Burger, Kwena Maphaka, and Lhuan-dre Pretorius of Rajasthan Royals, and Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The players picked to play in the WTC final are likely to arrive in Arundel, England, on May 31. They will then engage in a warm-up encounter against Zimbabwe between June 3 and June 6 before they travel to London on June 7 with the WTC final beginning on June 11. As things stand, IPL franchises can only remain hopeful of a situation that will enable them to keep their best players available for the latter part of the tournament.
