Are IPL Commentators Showing Too Much Love for Chennai Super Kings
Commentators of IPL 2025 are under fire for displaying bias towards Chennai Super Kings as fans and pundits demand more equitable coverage

The Indian Premier League is always full of excitement but this season there has been a new kind of buzz. Fans and experts have started noticing that some of the IPL commentators might be showing too much support for the Chennai Super Kings. The subject was brought up in a lighthearted moment when West Indies legend Ian Bishop cracked a sarcastic remark regarding how some of his fellow commentators are as pro-CSK as can be. He was speaking to Ambati Rayudu and observed that most of the old Chennai Super Kings players such as Rayudu himself as well as Matthew Hayden and Shane Watson tend to speak for CSK regardless.
Bishop did not get angry or upset but did say that the affection these old players have for CSK is very strong. He even jokingly said they would have to vacate the room before agreeing that CSK are not playing that well. He added that he gets that because they did such great things for the team during the past. So the bond seems to be something irreplaceable. Rayudu concurred and smiled saying that yes they are unapologetically pro-CSK.
This episode led to people discussing more about whether IPL commentators need to be more balanced when they talk during matches. Some supporters are of the view that previous players tend to be biased towards the teams they used to play for and that is acceptable. Others are of the opinion that commentaries need to be impartial towards all teams. When commentators are too biased towards one team it may be unfair to fans of the opposing side. The relationship between former players and their former teams is understandable but most viewers anticipate fair opinions during games.
Meanwhile, all this was going on off the pitch the Chennai Super Kings were struggling on the pitch. The team has made a slow start to the IPL 2025 campaign. They have won just one of their first four games. In their last game they lost to the Delhi Capitals by 24 runs at the Chepauk Stadium. The game reflected some of the difficulties the team is experiencing this season.
Delhi Capitals bowlers particularly the spinners Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav bowled excellently. They prevented the CSK batsmen from scoring easily and that assisted their team in winning. Post-match CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad explained why they are not winning. According to him, the team is working hard but things are not in their favor. He explained that they are losing too many wickets and conceding too many runs in the powerplay. He mentioned that bowlers and batsmen must play with increased confidence.
Gaikwad further added that players are nervous to some extent and perhaps it is the reason they are going wrong. He requested the players to remain upbeat and not become overly concerned at losing wickets in the beginning. He believes that the players are giving their best but as of now, they are merely failing to gain results.
All this adds more pressure on Chennai Super Kings and leaves fans thinking about what is going to happen for the rest of the season. While the hysteria around commentators being prejudiced raises a larger question regarding how much personal affiliations should affect live sports commentary. While it is normal for retired players to be emotionally attached to their former teams viewers also expect honest and straightforward opinions.
Ultimately the fun moment between Ian Bishop and Ambati Rayudu was harmless but it also opened up an honest conversation. As the IPL goes on fans will continue to watch not only the games but also the individuals discussing them. Whether CSK are able to turn their season around or not one thing is certain the passion and drama of the Indian Premier League will keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
